
In veterinary geriatrics, each nutrient must act as part of a precise mechanism. Feeding an older dog or cat is not just a matter of portion and flavor: it’s about adjusting proportions with clinical judgment. Fiber regulates digestive transit and the microbiota; carbohydrates, if complex and well chosen, provide sustainable energy without glycemic spikes; and good fats not only nourish, but also protect vital organs and modulate inflammation. An imbalance may lead to obesity, colitis, lethargy, or muscle loss. Getting this combination right is key to healthy longevity.
In geriatrics, it’s not only about which nutrients are provided, but how the animal digests them. Bioavailability matters more than the raw percentage. A diet adapted in fiber, carbohydrates, and fat can improve digestion, energy, and weight within a few weeks. Including prebiotics in the senior diet not only improves transit but also strengthens local intestinal immunity, which declines with age.
As the years go by, the intestine becomes a little sluggish. Here, fiber becomes a multifunctional ally. Soluble fiber, such as fructooligosaccharides, forms gels that soften stools and feed the intestinal microbiota. Insoluble fiber, such as cellulose, adds bulk and stimulates peristalsis, preventing constipation.
In addition, fiber helps regulate appetite, improves satiety, and has a prebiotic effect, keeping beneficial intestinal bacteria in balance – something essential in older animals with more delicate digestion.
Fermentable fiber produces short-chain fatty acids that serve as an energy source for colonocytes. Intestinal health also feeds itself!
Many foods labeled as “light” contain a high level of carbohydrates with low nutritional value. Good for slimming down… but not for aging well.
Geriatric animals have a lower tolerance to simple sugars such as glucose, sucrose, or syrups. These fast-absorbing carbohydrates cause blood sugar spikes, increase the risk of insulin resistance, and alter energy metabolism. This means it’s best to avoid foods high in glucose, sucrose, or syrups.
On the other hand, complex carbohydrates – such as oats, brown rice, or legumes – have a lower glycemic index and release energy steadily, without overloading the digestive system or altering blood sugar. In overweight dogs or cats at risk of diabetes, they are an indispensable nutritional tool.
Fats: neither fear nor excess
Fat plays essential roles: it enables absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), enhances palatability, and is a concentrated energy source. But in geriatrics, quality matters more than quantity. An excess of fat, especially saturated, can cause hyperlipidemia, pancreatitis, or weight gain in animals with reduced mobility.
Recommended are highly digestible and functional fats, such as fish oil (rich in EPA/DHA) or flaxseed oil (rich in alpha-linolenic acid). They provide anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits without burdening the digestive system.
• A 13-year-old cat named Spoke, with recurrent constipation, improved without medication after switching to a food with more soluble fiber and a moderate fat source. Within two weeks, his stools normalized and his mood improved.
• Luna, a 12-year-old dog with overweight, was eating light kibble but had low energy. Upon checking the label, we found an excess of simple carbohydrates. After switching to complex carbohydrates and healthy fats, she lost weight and regained vitality.
