Two lines of defence: vaccine + antiparasitics

Fighting leishmaniasis is no longer just about collars or spot-on treatments. The most effective approach is integrated prevention, combining:

A cutting-edge, non-infectious vaccine that safely trains the dog’s immune system to fight the parasite. It has been shown to reduce the risk of clinical disease by 72%.
External antiparasitics (collars or spot-ons) that repel the sandfly (Phlebotomus spp.).

Why is vaccination so important?

Why is a test required before vaccination?

Because the vaccine is only indicated for healthy, seronegative dogs.

To receive the free rapid test, one of the following is required:
- Vaccination in case of a negative result, or
- Veterinary treatment in case of a positive result
If the test is done without further services, the consultation and test will be billed at standard rates.
Appointments must be booked in advance and are subject to availability
Offer only applies to dogs that have never been vaccinated against leishmaniasis
Offer does not include extended blood tests or advanced lab diagnostics
Any additional services beyond the included test will be billed according to the official Eurovet price list

🐶 What every dog owner should know about leishmaniasis (no panic, just facts)

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania infantum, transmitted by the bite of a very small mosquito (the sandfly or phlebotomine).

Though it looks harmless, this mosquito can cause serious health problems in dogs.

🧐 What are the symptoms?

It’s a sneaky disease: it may start with vague signs like occasional limping, unexplained weight loss, dandruff, slow-healing wounds, or lethargy.

If left untreated, it can affect major organs like the kidneys.

🌍 Where is there a risk?

In almost all of Spain… and increasingly so. Rising temperatures and climate change have extended mosquito season – and with it, the risk.

🛡️ How do you prevent it?

Here’s the winning strategy:

External antiparasitics: collars or spot-ons that repel the mosquito
Vaccine: trains your dog’s immune system to fight the parasite if it enters the body

💡 Together, these measures can protect your dog up to 97% – much more than using one method alone.

🧪 And yes, a test is required before vaccination to ensure your dog hasn’t already been exposed. It’s quick and simple!
